The Big Barn

Shuttaford Barn is a recently converted barn on a 16thC Dartmoor farmstead on the edge of the moors. As a result it is the perfect spot to explore the wilds of Dartmoor, walking along the beautiful River Dart or heading to the many South Devon beaches for the day. Or just relaxing in the peaceful surroundings of the barn and its private garden..

The architect designed conversion has created a modern rustic feel to the space, reusing many of the original materials with vintage furnishings and a large double height country kitchen.

Inside the barn

An en-suite kingsize bedroom and twin bedroom are located downstairs, along with a family bathroom (with a luxurious rolltop bath and separate shower) and large kitchen dining space.

A staircase leads up to the main living space which has a ‘loft’ feel, and another double bedroom with a built in bed ‘nook’. The generous living room has a double sided woodburner and two seating areas, large rooflights provide a light and airy feel and a big opening window gives views out to the surrounding hills.

We can provide a travel cot for babies. Lots of books and games are provided for entertainment as well as TV with Netflix,  Amazon Prime and dvd player (and plenty of dvd’s),

We also have a new games room accessible from the kitchen terrace with Table Tennis, Table football and Darts for those stay at home days or lazy afternoons.

We had a fantastic stay at Shutterford Barn in Devon. The barn was spacious enough to comfortably accommodate four adults and two kids, with plenty of room to relax and spwnd time together. The design of the space and decor is beautiful, and the entire property is incredibly cosy. The game room has been great for kids to feel free to play even during rainy days. One of the things that stood out to me the most about Shutterford Barn was the incredible attention to detail throughout the entire property. From the thoughtful touches in the bedrooms to the well-stocked kitchen, everything was set up to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The area guide is particularly helpful to find things to do. Beyond just the physical space, the location of Shutterford Barn was also ideal. We were able to easily explore the surrounding area, including local beaches and villages, and we were always happy to return to the peaceful serenity of the barn at the end of a long day.
Shuttaford Barn was everything we had in mind and more! The barn was well equipped, super clean and most importantly very cute and cosy (!) which was just what we needed after coming ‘home’ from a hike. The barn is in a lovely rural location so it was perfect for the phones off, quiet retreat that we were after. It’s worth a mention that there are plenty of smaller towns around for items you may want to pick up for your stay but I’d definitely recommend hiring or taking a car. Francesca was super friendly and helpful on the lead up to our trip giving us a very detailed list of local towns, eateries and walking spots, we really couldn’t have asked for more. We’ve already recommended the barn to all of our friends and can’t wait to return!
We had a lovely three night stay at Shuttaford Farm - a perfect escape with two kids, with everything we needed in the property
The big barn was fabulous, the setting is picturesque and despite being right next door to the farmhouse was very private with its own parking and garden thoughtfully delineated. The finishes and design are some of the most sensitive and tasteful we have come across in a holiday property but the barn was also very family friendly with thoughtful touches such as toys books cutlery and a stair gate - all things that make holidaying with little ones more enjoyable for everyone! Holne was a 2 min drive and was very pretty and well provisioned with The Chapel House Pub - delicious food and such friendly staff. The barn is perfectly positioned to venture north to the moor or south to the beautiful coast. We had a delicious lunch at riverford kitchen only 20mins away We would love to come back!
We had a wonderful long weekend in Shuttaford barn. It's a beautiful space with lots of character, yet also well thought out and very easy to use. We were there through a seriously cold weekend but the barn was always toasty and welcoming - and positively roasting with the burner going. The location is wonderful; off the beaten track but close both to amazing walks on the moor and the shopping and eating delights of Ashburton and Totnes. All in all a really great place to stay!
Francesca's place is beyond words. The Barn conversion is to be seen and experienced. The kitchen is ready made for a family dinner - in our case, a thanksgiving dinner - and with quality fixtures, well thought out utensils and a welcome gift basket finishing the touch. The upstairs is an architect's dream conversion. Carefully thought out, the wood fireplace sits in the middle of the living space, providing two separate yet, flow through spaces for adults and children. The furnishings are modern country chic. Think Bertoia and Eames and French country. The chairs are covered with sheepskin and blankets that invited us all weekend in cozy Devon. The heated floors mostly throughout the house, provided that extra touch that signaled that the hosts really cared about their space. Phil was quickly to point out the local pub in the area, which quickly became our weekend favorite for family dinners, and a potential dance night. Thanks to them, we created new memories this weekend...
We had a brilliant stay at Shuttaford. The house is gorgeous as is the location. It's a beautifully designed space, and is light, warm and comfortable. The local village of Holne is very pretty, easily walkable. I'd heartily recommended the Church House Inn there, a great pub with an excellent Sunday lunch! The village store is handy for essential supplies too. All in all, a great place to escape to!
We had a lovely few nights at Shuttaford Barn! The space is beautifully created, spotlessly clean and in a idyllic secluded location, perfect for a relaxing break. Rooms are comfortable and there's plenty of space for 6. If you're looking for a lovingly created, cosy break close to walks by the river dart we would definitely recommend!
We had a fantastic 3 night stay. The place was spotless and really well decorated and finished. Francesca was very quick in answering any questions before the trip and the check in and out was very easy.
The barn is beautiful. So much thought has gone into kitting the place out to be able to cook for and entertain the group! The barn was sparkling clean and each room was presented so well. Beds were nice and comfortable. Francesca was very quick replying to any questions we had.

Outside the barn

The barn has it’s own private hillside garden accessed via the private drive along the old apple orchard. This has a large lawn area, patio with chairs and table, and a ‘secret’ higher garden with deck chairs for a quiet sunbathing spot that seems like your own private piece of Dartmoor.
